This article provides the scientific research behind the ParentsEmpowered media campaign and uses research-proven facts to answer questions that are sometimes raised in the media about the real harms of underage drinking. It shows that alcohol does indeed affect a teen developing brain differently than a mature adult brain and can lead to a decreased ability to learn, increased risk of addiction, increased risk of mental health problems, and an increase in anti-social behavior. Parents who provide alcohol to teens or allow their teens to drink are more likely to have children who become binge drinkers. The ParentsEmpowered Workgroup has acted responsibly and professionally in getting this message to the public.
